To access the stair from the upper deck it was decided to allow a forward start and circle around and arrive under the upper deck. This keeps the stair structure off the lower deck and out of the way. |

The treads are secured into position by each baluster which is cut into the tread and secured to the tread frame with 4 screws at each tread intersection. |

Each tread is secured to its neighbor with 4 1 1/2 inch deck screws. This stair was built with CCA treated pine boards. Standard galvanized screws were used. With today's new pressure treatment, stainless steel screws should be used. |

A 1/2 inch hole was drilled through the 1 1/2 inch galvanized pipe, and the stair was bolted to the upper deck. The galvanized pipe is threaded through a hole drilled through each tread. A forestner bit with an extension will do this job very well. Be sure the galvanized pipe does not fit too snuggly, as this will be a problem as you thread each tread onto the pipe. |
